The Malibu Surfing Assoc.'s MSA Classic Invitational is the United States' most prestigious club-level surfing contest and premier event in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs annual series. This invitational contest will be held at Surfrider Beach, Malibu from September 5-7, 2014. More than 250 invited athletes representing surfing clubs from around the world to compete at First Point, Malibu, one of surfing’s legendary waves.
In 2013, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their first contest at historic Surfrider Beach, the Malibu Surfing Association (MSA) recaptured top prize at their hosted event, the MSA Classic Invitational. The team overall win was MSA's first of the year and marks the first time in three years that MSA won its home contest.
With small waves starting the Invitational on Friday, Malibu saw one event return to its beaches and the introduction of another. Together with Foam Symmetry magazine, MSA hosted the second annual Malibu Noseriding Championships, a noseriding-only event for elite men and women surfers. Scoring points for hang fives and double points for hang tens, heat winners clocked up to thirty seconds of tip time across Malibu's famed First Point walls. In a final of 4 noseriding greats and up-and-comers, MSA's Chad Marshall took first, Honolua Blomfield (HI) second, MSA's Zander Hartman (CA) third, and Ricky Cunningham (CA) fourth. MSA also paired with Bing Surfboards and Seea to bring California's only longboarding event for professional and elite women - the Women's Logger - to the MSA Classic Invitational. World Champion Jen Smith (San Diego, CA) took first place in what everyone hopes will become an annual event.
