Claim to fame: The Huntington Beach Pier is home to the annual U.S. Open of Surfing, known as the largest surf competition in the world. The event is owned and run by IMG, a global sports, entertainment and media company. The first U.S. Surfing Championship, as it was known, was held in Huntington in 1959, solidifying the area's reputation as a premier surfing destination. For new or veteran surfers, having consistent waves year-round with nice open space and no rocks or hazards makes Huntington Beach a place to thrive. And the surf culture, reflected in the name Surf City, makes for an inviting lifestyle. Huntington Beach-based surfline.com is a popular surfing-information resource and has webcams for the north and south sides of the pier.
