Many of the breaks we list here on IST share names with other breaks around the world, hence the need for names like "Shipwrecks - Baja California Norte, Mexico" and "Shipwrecks - Poipu Beach, Hawaii".
No such need for Mundaka, it's widely considered one of the ten "must surf" spots on the planet, particularly for lovers of spitting machine like barreling lefts that fire across the sandbar at the rivermouth.
Waves: The very definition of sick, sand-bottom, perfectly foiled, river mouth sand bar perfection. Depending on the time of year the sand build up varies. Crazy time is the first swell of Autumn when the sands topped right up and it can be two foot deep. All about the barrel so it’s an advanced surfer spot only.
Swell info: Best from Sept around to Easter. Always crowded unless you get one of those crazy runs of winter swell where it can be good for a month straight. Don’t laugh, it does happen. Needs a big NW, to much N and Izaro island offshore can block it. offshores funnel out the estuary so any wind in the S has potential. Best at low to mid tide, at high it can be fun for goat-boaters and SUP freaks.
